I would like to reserve this post as an entry to the Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival 7th edition hosted by The Working Mom with the theme – How do you discipline your kids?
From the title itself, it will tell you how strict I am especially to my daughter. I must admit, I hit her a few times when I think she deserves one. This is the best reminder that I think so she won’t repeat the same mistakes again. I am not going to justify my action but I just want to elaborate further.

The Kind of Parent that We Are – Pinoy Parenting Blog Carvival 6th Edition
Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 6:45 PM Posted by Angel
I would like to reserve this post to summarize all the entries for the Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival 6th edition with the topic – What kind of parent are you? This is an interesting question for me as it covers parents with children of all ages. So now, I proudly present to you all the Pinoy parent bloggers who participated.
Doc Joey
The humble originator of this carnival who is also a mother of a two-year old boy says that she is trying to be loving as possible, but very firm when things are going unreasonable. She is also learning by attending meeting with fellow parents.
Mon
He admits that when his children were young, he is very strict just like his Chinese father. But upon realizing that they were growing up, it is time to change and he has now become a cool daddy. He learned that parenting is a two-way street.
Angel Cuala
This is Yours Truly using my real name. Just like Mon, I am very strict especially to my daughter as she is growing into a young lady. But then, I can easily convert myself into a jolly father and the clown of the family. But more than anything else, they can talk to me about anything under the sun.
Manilenya
Being away from her daughter for the last five years is not a burden to become a good mother, she claims. She believes that as long as you have good communication with your child, it does not matter where you are. Her 11-year old daughter has a Friendster account which I believe a great sign of being independent and mature.
Mec
She says she will let his son discover things and to be happy while learning. She will allow his son to be free, resourceful and creative as she believes that independence will help her son achieve his future goals.
Kcee
As her daughter loves to draw but afraid she cannot make it, she believes that it is the proper motivation and positive outlook towards life that must be prioritized. She is preparing her child to be a strong soldier against thousands of battles ahead of her.
Jing
As a new parent, she will try to balance everything between a strict mother and a friendly one. Although she admits that there is no such thing as perfect parents and there is no appropriate handbook when it comes to parenting, she hopes to be the most suitable mother for his son.
Pinaywife
As a wife of a husband working in another country, she admits it is really stressful be doing the parenting alone. However, she is happy that her husband is always available when it comes to decision making about posting discipline to their child. She may be a sweet mother, but very strict with it comes to food, manners and TV time.
Haze
Being a fun mother and a disciplinarian in between, she admits she spanks the hand of her children when her patience is being tested. However, she makes sure that it is not hurt that is being felt, but rather the explanation on why they should be corrected. She proudly says that she is also learning from her children.
HotMomma
Although she claims that she is stricter than her husband, she says that she sacrificed a lot in order for her children to grow as they should be, something that all mothers should do. She may not be playful just like others but she lets her children have their fun moments.
Girl for all status
As she admires mothers who sacrifice their jobs to be a full time mother, she believes that it is still the child’s welfare that is more important. According to her, no mother can claim that she is a better mother over the others as it is not right to judge anyone unless we put ourselves in their shoes. She is doing her best to be the best for her kids.
Jenaisle
Although she had kids at an early age and she had been mistaken as their older sister, she still proves to them that she is the mother. She might not be that strict, but she sees to it that everything is being settled and that family is something they can always run to.

But before I turn over the hosting back to Doc Joey, let me tell you that I enjoyed each moment and every entry for the last two editions taught me a lot not only as a father, but as a human being per se.
Thanks to all who trusted my blog and submitted their entries and of course to Doc Joey for giving me this great opportunity. It was a great honor, indeed!

What type of parent are you? - An Invitation for Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival 6th edition
Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 10:57 PM Posted by Angel
I would like to reserve this post as an invitation for Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival (PPBC) 6th edition. I choose this question as a lesson to learn from parents with children of all ages.
I know all of us are trying to be the best parent in the world, but what kind of parent are you? Are you the type of mother who is willing to leave your young ones to a nanny in exchange of a decent job? Or do you prefer to be a housewife taking care of your children personally? Are you a strict parent watching every move of your child, to make sure that she is not doing anything wrong? Or are you letting your child do his thing and just be there when he needs help?
How do you discipline your children? Do you spank them when you think it is necessary, or do you always keep your composure? Can you scare them by just looking in their eyes, or do you still need to practice your vocal cords?
If you are a father like me, will you impose stricter rules to your daughters and will be quite loose to sons?
What are the things you think you should improve as a parent, if there is any? What are your best and worst characters as a parent?
If you are a parent of new born babies or a first time parent to-be, what type of parent would you want to be?
Ask all of these and other related questions to your self and feel free to share them to the world. I am sure that different parents have different styles on how to handle children, especially the growing ones.
I hope this topic is interesting enough, and can attract a lot of entries just like the recent one.
Here are some reminders of the submission guidelines.
1.0 This is open to all English-only submissions.
2.0 No limit number of words, but I prefer valuable entries. I will disapprove entries that are obviously created to promote a product or a blog. No affiliate links allowed.

4.0 Leave a comment to this post and include a link to your entry. Please make sure that the link is live.

PPBC 5th edition - What do you want your Children to be when they grow up?
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 3:32 PM Posted by Angel
Finally, here is the summary of the entries for Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival 5th edition (PPBC). Being a proud father of two growing kids, I find this question very interesting. I am glad to announce that all entries were exciting and valuable to read. There were new ones who wholeheartedly accepted my invitation.
So without further ado, here they are.
Doc Joey
The humble originator of this carnival, whose husband is also a doctor like her, finds it cute that her son is being teased as Dr. E or a doctor, too. However, she emphasizes that she will not push him to follow their footsteps. Instead, she will teach him how to invest money so he will not be poor someday.
Joan Joyce
Once dubbed as the Entrecard Queen, she dreams of her daughter to be a good doctor someday. This is because she noticed that her daughter is good in memorizing fast. Coincidentally, this is also the dream of her parents when she was young. However, she will not impose it but rather expose her.
Guardian Angel
I have a pair of children, my daughter is 12 and my son is 7. She is hyperactive and can easily go along with people, so I think she can be a good talk show host or a broadcaster someday. As of my son, his curiousness about cars can drive him to be a successful engineer when time comes.
Mon
Being my partner in Entrecard, two of his four children are now in college taking up Nursing and Marine transportation, respectively. For the other two, he just hope that they will be responsible and GOD fearing citizens of this country. He even mentioned that finishing college these days is not a guarantee of a bright future tomorrow – very true!
Bing
Being an Industrial Engineer herself, she hopes her children to have careers that are related in Math and Science because she thinks analyzing some things can help to overcome other problems in life. But she feels that it is the character that really helps one to be successful.
Betchay
Being married to a Korean, she sees her son as being a multi-talented child. She dreams he can be a great dancer, an engineer or a TV personality someday. According to her, competition in Korea is very stiff. But then, she will be supportive whatever her son wants to be someday, as long as he is happy and not hurting anyone.
Mec
Having no doctor in her family, she hopes that at least one of her children can be a medical practitioner someday. But her dream for all of them is to travel around the world, as well as to be a wide reader. According to her, it is nice to wake up to see the sun in different parts of the world.
Jengki
Although she has millions of dreams for her son, she thinks Joaqui can be a great musician someday because loves to watch and hear someone singing. But she also noticed that her son can also be a chef because he also loves to eat. Whatever his son would be, she hopes he can live a full life with kindness and love in his heart.
Jing
Although she thinks that her son being an engineer or a computer professional someday who can cope with this fast-pacing world, she would like her son to serve GOD and to be active in the church ministry. To attain this, she is guiding him very much in terms of honesty, respect and faith.
Maver
Because she sees her son as a keen observer about structures and mechanical things, she dreams he can either be a civil or mechanical someday. But just as her parents did not force her to be someone she does not like, she will do the same as long as his son will be a positive builder.
Girl for all status
A brave and strong mother that she is shares her experiences about her special child who was diagnosed with Autism eighteen months after birth. With this, she only dreams that her child will grow as normal as she can be and can surpassed all the challenges she will face. Now, MG is as strong and as sweet as her mother.
To view their entire entries, please click their names.
Whew! What a great list! Different kinds of parents with different principles in life, but with a common dream – to have their children grow as great caretakers of the next generation and enjoying the freedom to choose while picking up the good traits and junking the bas ones. .
With this, I would like to thank you all for giving your precious time and sharing your dreams to the world. I enjoyed reading them and learned some lessons as well.

What I dream about my Children when they grow up
Friday, July 4, 2008 at 11:54 PM Posted by Angel
This is my official entry to the 5th edition of Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival (PPBC) in which I am the host for this month.
All parents have dreams for their children when they grow up. This may be something that they did not achieve or because they have someone they really look up to. There are also some parents who want their children to follow their footsteps such as great doctors, politicians and even artists. However, there are some parents who have simple dreams for their children; to grow as kind, honest and loving citizen of the world. Since I am seeing my children everyday, here are my dreams for them.
For my daughter
Since she was a toddler, I noticed that she has a great potential to be a broadcaster or a TV host. This is because she is always hyperactive and likes to do things that many can watch her. I remember a few times that she joined dance contests and recitals without someone encouraging her. She likes to memorize long lines of monologue and loves to dress fashionably. She received some awards and citations because of her undeniable talent. She will turn twelve this month and also likes to join a lot of groups and communities.
In fact, she also likes to blog but I told her to prioritize her studies first and help her mother in the household work, as well as to look after his small brother.
And mind you, you can easily notice if we were both at home. We are fond of sharing stories about anything and everything as if we are deaf. Our voices are heard over the neighborhood as if there is a political rally inside our house.
With all of these, I am dreaming that someday I will see her every time I open my television and watch my favorite news and talk shows.
For my son
It is sad that he has asthma and at this moment, he is not yet that well. Although I can feel that he is now better than when he was a baby, he is still prone to common sickness such as cough and colds. He has gone through a lot of medication, and is being hospitalized at least twice a year. He is quite skinny but he takes a lot of vitamins and eats healthy foods.
But this does not hinder him to love cars. He is gong crazy upon seeing them and you cannot easily disturb him if he is playing with his favorite ones. He even files them all beside his bed and he knows if they are lacking or being misplaced. Since he cannot play outside longer than other kids, he easily learned how to read and write.
Now that he is seven years old, his interest in cars is more fascinating than ever. What amazes me is he do not just play with them, he loves to look at them very seriously as if he is studying their principle. In addition, he is a good reader at his age. He received an award in Best in Reading even if he can hardly pronounce words. He also consumes most of his time reading and writing in his Mega Sketcher.
With all of these, I am dreaming that he can be a brilliant engineer someday.
It is nice to have dreams for our children, but we must also remember that they have their own dreams and we can only support them.
With this, I am inviting all Filipino parents to join the fun and earn good traffic to your blogs. You can find additional guidelines here. Deadline of submission is until July 10, 2008 @ 12 midnight.

10 Exciting Ways my Children are showing their Love for us
Friday, June 20, 2008 at 11:12 PM Posted by Angel
Being a father of two is very rewarding to me and to my wife. Although there are times that they are naughty, they are so wonderful that I cannot ask for more but for them to grow healthy and responsible individuals. My daughter will turn twelve next month while my son is only seven years old. But they are old enough to understand how much we love them. In return, they have more than hundred ways of showing their love for us. However, here are only some of them that we really cherish.
1.0 They never forget to say Good Morning when they wake up.
2.0 They cannot go to sleep without kissing us Good Night.
3.0 They tell everyone that we are their parents even they were not being asked.
4.0 When they are being admired by their good works, they explained that it is because we teach them.
5.0 They are sad when we are sick and well-behaved so that we will not be disturbed during our rest.
6.0 They remind us to go to sleep early when they saw me blogging at late night while their mother is busy with her sewing machine.
7.0 They turn on the television when it is time for our favorite news if we are busy to attend to.
8.0 They watch their mother while cooking for dinner and share with me their daily school happenings.
9.0 They ask permission if they want to play with our computer. They do not insist themselves if they know I am busy blogging.
10.0 They are very passionate. They never miss to say I Love You before they leave for school, when they eat their favorite lunch, when they have new clothes and toys, and sometimes even there is no reason at all.
The greatest gift parents can receive from their children is love, no matter how hard life is.

About Fixed and Changing Parenting Tips
Friday, June 13, 2008 at 12:43 AM Posted by Angel
I would like to reserve this post as my entry to the 3rd edition of Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival hosted by The Working Mom whom I also call Doc Joey. The chosen topic this time is about parenting tips that I can consider ageless, which I learned from my parents and now passing on to my children, as well as the tips that I somehow changed to comply with the changing times. Although there are many of them, I choose the ones closest to my heart.
Respect for parents
Our parents are not perfect and will never be. I am a product of a broken family but it does not mean I have bad parents. In fact, I have high respect for my mother even if I did not grow up with her, and it did not even reduced even a bit through the years. I never questioned her abilities on being my mother. I always explain it to my daughter that sometimes we make wrong decision in our lives but the more important thing is we correct it. As a parent, we deserve to be respected because parenting is a very tough job.
Humility
As we grow older, we meet different kind of people and some are kind while some are not. My father used to remind me that what ever I will be when I grow up, humility should always be present. I worked hard to reach what ever I am enjoying right now but I am doing my best to always keep my feet on the ground. I am very strict to my children when it comes to treating other people. The people below us might be the same people who will help us get on the top. After all, the world is round.
Freedom
Being an obedient child, we follow our parents because they know better what is good for us. Some parents choose everything for their child even if the child does not want it. I am an engineer not by choice, but by force. Although my mother did not literally force me, she did not like my dream being a policeman then. She wanted me to be a lawyer and the result, I became what we do not want both. I can see my daughter as a good broadcaster journalist someday, but if she wants to be a model, I will support her all the way.
Communication
I still remember my father and I playing chess during my teenage years, but we never had funny moments. We always talk about serious things such as current events, politics and history. He is also fond of making jokes but not with me. In short, I do not remember him as my buddy. I am thirty years older than my daughter but I see to it that we have a very close relationship. I do not allow generation gap to be a hinder with our bonding time. I try to talk to her as an older brother instead of a plain father. In fact, we are now best of friends.
The most effective parenting tips can be found in the deepest part of our hearts.
With this, I am inviting all proud Pinoy parents to join this blog carnival. Please feel free to see the guidelines here at PPBC.

How to prepare your Child on his First School Day
Monday, May 19, 2008 at 5:46 PM Posted by Angel
I would like to reserve this post as my 2nd entry to The Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival (PPBC) and the topic is about sending our child to school.
All parents want their child to have the best education. We find the best school for them and we prepare all the things that they need. While it looks fun and exciting to see our child walk his first day of school, we must also consider his feelings. Some of them cry and rush to go home, others are very shy but some really made it through. So to make sure that special day will be really special, here are important things parents should do.
Inform your child
Some parents assume that their child clearly understand what the first day of school is. We should explain very well its importance even before the school starts. By doing this regularly, he will be asking some questions which means he is getting interested. However, if he says wants you to stay with him, stay with him. Then train him slowly afterward. Forcing your child to go to school is an advisable. You do not want your child to be traumatic with his first day.
Visit the school
When school time is getting near, visit the school together with your child. In this way, he will have an idea on what will be happening everyday. You may even tell him where he will be sitting, and how far you will be away from him during the first day. You may hear some contradictions and suggestions from your child. Consider that as a healthy response. It is good that you already know how he feels before getting into it. You can therefore make some adjustments if necessary.
Meet the classmates
Your child may be brave, but meeting with other children for the first time may intimidate him. Therefore, it would be helpful if he will meet them before the classes start. If possible, befriend other parents and introduce your child to them. The more classmates your child will meet, the better for them. It will also help the parents if they will know each other somehow. With this, you can easily get along with them when school days begin. For young children, school time is also playtime.
Meet the teacher
This is the most important part. Your child’s first teacher will be his second parent when he is in school, so you should meet her first before your child. You should act like a bridge for them to know some things about each other. Then give them some time to bond. This is to make them comfortable with each other. It is essential to build confidence to your child you leave him to her. This will also help the teacher to know the right approach to your child.

Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival – My First Taste of Fatherhood
Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 6:57 PM Posted by Angel
I would like to reserve this post as my first entry to Pinoy Parenting Blog Carnival. I am a father of 2 wonderful children and I am here to share my first taste of fatherhood.
The year was 1996 and the place is Quezon City, Philippines. My wife gave birth to our eldest child, a cute and lovable tiny baby girl in a private, but cheap hospital. She was all white and I thought she had a skin problem. The nurse calmed me down and told me it is normal because she is a mestiza. My wife has an American blood, lucky me!
But unfortunately, I lost my job 2 weeks before that very special day, but I had some money because of the separation pay. Yes, the company closed literally and in front of my face.
After 2 days, we decided to rest at my cousin’s house since we are living in Laguna then. But the day was not yet over when my cousin noticed that my baby turned yellowish and as a mother and a former nursing student, she knew my daughter is in deep trouble. We immediately rushed her to a well-known hospital to make sure proper attention will be given to my poor little angel.
During the 4-day stay in the hospital, nurses kept on doing numerous laboratory tests and frequently getting blood from my daughter’s arm. Imagine the size of a needle compared to her arms! Four hot fluorescent lamps were also placed on top of her bed. My wife and I wish that we will wake up from this nightmare!
According to the doctors, my first baby had an infection on her navel possibly due to contaminated surroundings when she was born. My wife somehow agreed because she observed that the delivery room was not really clean that time. She even noticed that there was rust on her bed.
But because only a few hundred bucks were left from my separation pay, we did not bother to file a complaint. In addition, I have to prioritize finding a new job and we were just so lucky because our landlady was kind enough not to get our apartment rent, which is 4 months after when I was finally hired again.
After almost 12 years, that little baby who almost died instantly is now blooming into a young lady. Yes, my daughter is now the most charming and talented girl I ever saw. She is even helping her mother in watching over her brother.
Sometimes, we must learn the hard way.
